Los Angeles plays itself

Als eine «etwas andere Stadtsymphonie» beschreibt LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF die Stadt Los Angeles anhand von Filmen, die ihre Geschichte und Geografie mittels bewegter Bilder rekonstruieren. Der Film möchte eine Seite der Stadt porträtieren, die wenig bekannt, ja unsichtbar ist – obwohl L.A. durch die Hollywood-Filme allen so vertraut erscheint. Mit von Ausschnitten aus Hunderten von Streifen, die in L.A. gedreht wurden – vom berühmtesten bis hin zum obskursten –, richtet LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf die dokumentarischen Enthüllungen, die sich in diesen Spielfilmen verbergen.

A “city symphony in reverse”, LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF depicts Los Angeles through cinema, seeking to reconstruct its history and geography through moving images. The film attempts to portray a side of the city that is little known, almost invisible, despite the city’s familiarity through Hollywood movies. Using clips from hundreds of films shot in Los Angeles, from the most famous to the most obscure, it asks us to watch with our voluntary attention and look for the documentary revelations buried in fiction films.
