Zum Programm:
Finally it's time! This evening Kirill Petrenko will be the new principal conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker for the first time. For his inauguration he has put one of the greatest symphonic masterpieces of the 19th century on the programme: Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Quasi from nowhere, from a simple fifth sound, Beethoven creates an overwhelming field of musical tension in this work, which finds salvation and exaltation in the hymn-like, visionary choral finale "Freude, schöner Götterfunken".

The symphony possesses great symbolic power in many respects. The grandiose final movement with the final chorus of Schiller's Ode "An die Freude" could not express more vividly the enthusiasm with which Petrenko and the Philharmonic start into their common future, nor does the Ninth convey an important statement, a clear commitment to humanity, to the equality of all people.

The performance of the symphony also opens Beethoven's focus, which will shape the programme for this season on the occasion of the composer's 250th birthday in 2020. At the same time, it is a musical homage to the previous chief conductors of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Starting with Hans von Bülow, who performed the work twice in a row in one concert, to Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan, who conducted the symphony at the opening of the newly built Philharmonie in 1963, to Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle, each of the conductors was thrilled with his own inimitable interpretation of the Ninth Symphony.

The season opening also offers soprano Marlis Petersen the opportunity to make her first major appearance as Artist in Residence 2019/2020. The artist has worked with Kirill Petrenko on several occasions. In summer 2019 she will make her role debut as Salome in the opera of the same name by Richard Strauss under his direction at the Bavarian State Opera. She sings the solo soprano in Beethoven's Ninth and the vocal part in Alban Berg's Symphonic Pieces from Lulu, which will be performed at the beginning of the season opening concert. The role of Lulu has given Marlis Petersen his international breakthrough. In the Symphonic Pieces, which the composer published in 1934 to arouse the curiosity of audiences, conductors and artistic directors for his new opera Lulu, she once again presents some facets of her brilliant role.
